Online teaching tip for:
ICT Readiness level: Basic & Intermediate
Digital channels: Online via pc, tablet & smartphone. WhatsApp on smartphone
Subject & Grades: Languages, Grades R-7
Reading with children is a fun and educational activity for teachers and parents to be busy with during this lockdown period. A wide selection of reading books by organisations like Nal’ibali, BookDash, African StoryBook and Fundza can be found online in all South African languages.
To find your way in this colourful collection, English teacher Thokozile suggests the Digital Librarian-page which offers advice on which books to use for your Term 2 reading activities. On the page you select your grade and the topic you are interested in teaching and the Digital Librarian shares a suitable selection from the e-books available from the Reading Corner. Then just click on the book’s cover to open, read and/or download it in PDF format.
To read the book with your learners you could:
Basic:
- share the link to the book or the PDF file with reading instructions to the learners/parents via WhatsApp or SMS
- record yourself reading the book using the voice recording app on your smart phone and share this recording with the learners/parents via WhatsApp
Intermediate:
- Use Zoom to record yourself reading while you have the book open on your screen. After recording you can upload the file to your Google Drive and share the link with the learners/parents.
- Organise a live reading session by setting up a Zoom meeting and inviting the learners to attend. This allows for the learners to participate, read along and answer questions.
Thokozile and her fellow Flying Cows are ready to personally assist schools & teachers with the implementation of online reading sessions. We offer webinars as well as video & phone consultations.
